I'm hoping/guessing/assuming that those more specific zones would override the global forward. Note that you could put this global forward in your forward-zones-file as well.

Yes, it doesn't actually work at all. It will just tell your recursor to use 8.8.4.4 to find the root or TLD-servers, and from then on it will just send non-recursive queries to those servers.
