We've done benchmarks with MySQL with real-life data and have no problem
with thousands of DNS queries/second. MySQL replication is quite good but I
haven't had a chance to measure it against IXFR.

I do know that MySQL replication has worked flawlessly for us, even over
pretty crappy links.
