Hello Nick

Starting with version 3 you need them at runtime...

---
[root at playground ~]# ldd /usr/sbin/pdns_server
         linux-vdso.so.1 =>   (0x00007fff58fbc000)
         libboost_serialization-mt.so.5 =>
/usr/lib64/libboost_serialization-mt.so.5 (0x0000003f5e800000)
         liblua-5.1.so =>  /usr/lib64/liblua-5.1.so (0x0000003dacc00000)
         libdl.so.2 =>  /lib64/libdl.so.2 (0x0000003da8800000)
         libz.so.1 =>  /lib64/libz.so.1 (0x0000003daa400000)
         libstdc++.so.6 =>  /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6 (0x0000003f60400000)
         libm.so.6 =>  /lib64/libm.so.6 (0x0000003da9800000)
         libgcc_s.so.1 =>  /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x0000003f60000000)
         libpthread.so.0 =>  /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x0000003da9000000)
         libc.so.6 =>  /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x0000003da8c00000)
         librt.so.1 =>  /lib64/librt.so.1 (0x0000003da9c00000)
         /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x0000003da8400000)
---

It looks like that part is missing in the "Compiling PowerDNS on Unix"
section of the documentation ;-)
