[Pdns-users] question about authority (im sure this has been asked a 100 times, sorry!)

Yes they are:

> dig @ns1.dreamhost.com domain.com

               ^^

This means 'Authoritative Answer'. The presence or absence of the SOA record
is not of relevance.
