Sorry, it's not my best day today (too little sleep in the past days),
but here we go:

PowerDNS 2.9.17 on Debian using MySQL backend with the very same table
(mysqldump'ed) as the last
version that was running on FreeBSD 4.11. mysql backend config is ok, it
seems:

Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15043]: Master/slave communicator launching
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15040]: Creating backend connection for TCP
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15040]: gmysql Connection succesful
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15040]: About to create 3 backend threads
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15046]: gmysql Connection succesful
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15043]: gmysql Connection succesful
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15043]: All slave domains are fresh
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15049]: gmysql Connection succesful
Jul  8 16:50:34 iota pdns[15051]: gmysql Connection succesful

The server does respond with not authoritive replies (i.e. it works, but
hasn't got any config yet due to the above mentioned issue).
