I like this idea of separate tables for slaved and native zones.

To the OP:  I'd suggest trying pgsql; it can do views -- essentially
a virtual table which can be made up from the two master tables.

The best alternative I can see is a custom printf(3)-like function
for pdsn that accepts eg %t and %n for the type and name strings
and replaces each no matter how many times the occur in the string.
