There's no such thing as 5.1-STABLE. STABLE is still the 4 branch and
5 will become the STABLE branch later this year (probably around 5.2)

As the drive in my CURRENT box recently died (Maxtor crap it was in
case you wanna know), I currently have no CURRENT box up and running
but 4.8 behavior is of any help, I'll gladly test recursing there.
You might want to try compiling pdns yourself without ports?
