Unfortunately postgres is shipped with a default config that is
*very* consirvative with memory.  The configuration must be changed
to get reasonable performace.

(I beleive they've decided to fix that for 7.4, but I'm sure I still
needed to do it myself when I last installed postgres from debian sid.)
