PowerDNS works the way it does because it's robust, flexible, and 
standards-compliant (and fast).

Maybe it could be made faster by removing some of those attributes.  But 
suppose it already runs 10 times faster than you need it to - would 
making it work 20 times faster be of any benefit?

And at the other extreme, if today it runs 10 times slower than you need 
it to, then running 5 times slower than you need wouldn't help you either.

I don't think sacrificing good design in the name of performance is a 
good idea.
