I am trying to use it with Postgres 9. Googling revealed that I should comment out a module line in the conf file, but my conf file does not have that line.

Is the pdns-backend-pgsql package installed? If so, please remove the `module-dir` directive from all config files in `/etc/powerdns` and `/etc/powerdns/pdns.d`.
If this does not help, please share the output of `dpkg -l pdns*` and all your config file (without passwords).
