I don't have the deb for the version installed around. I guess I could grab it from
repo.powerdns.com if somethign goes wrong, right?
I went to the database schema upgrade and I made sure it is up-to-date.
Then I went to try to install the 3.4 version with:
$ sudo dpkg -i pdns-static_3.4.0-1_amd64.deb
And it replied with:
dpkg: regarding pdns-static_3.4.0-1_amd64.deb containing pdns-static:
pdns-static conflicts with pdns-server
pdns-server (version 3.3-2ubuntu0.1) is present and installed.
dpkg: error processing archive pdns-static_3.4.0-1_amd64.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing pdns-static
Errors were encountered while processing:
pdns-static_3.4.0-1_amd64.deb
Just asking the obvious (to confirm), from what it seems to be telling me.
Do I have to uninstall 3.3 first before proceeding with the upgrade?

Sure, I made a backup of those.
