You cannot have a CNAME record at a zone apex. It's forbidden by the
RFCs, and if you do it anyway, behavior of DNS software is undefined.
Either do it the other way around (CNAME on www.example.com pointing
to example.com) or, preferably, don't use a CNAME at all, just an
identical A record on www.example.com.
