I've also tried using CentOS-packaged BIND on a 32-bit Linux system as a
slave, no dice:

(after pdns_control notify foobar.com on the master)
info: client 10.202.108.20#26838: received notify for zone 'foobar.com'
info: zone foobar.com/IN: Transfer started.
info: transfer of 'foobar.com/IN' from 10.202.108.20#53: connected using
10.202.100.21#43153
info: transfer of 'foobar.com/IN' from 10.202.108.20#53: resetting
info: transfer of 'foobar.com/IN' from 10.202.108.20#53: connected using
10.202.100.21#57349
error: transfer of 'foobar.com/IN' from 10.202.108.20#53: failed while
receiving responses: unexpected message id
info: transfer of 'foobar.com/IN' from 10.202.108.20#53: end of transfer
