I would support Alexx's statement about the overall performance. Just now
one of my nameservers died with
"Error creating thread: Cannot allocate memory" in the log file. No dig or
host queries could return anything.
The box runs 1 GB of RAM and had about 400MB of free RAM when it died. Are
we looking into hardware or software problem?

Subject: [Pdns-users] PDNS slow
Hi :-)
I installed pdns-static-2.9.21-1.i386.rpm on RHEL4 (2.6.9-34.0.1.ELsmp #1
SMP Wed May 17 17:05:24 EDT 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux) together with the
test.com sample found on powerdns.com.
When I run /etc/init.d/powerdns monitor, sometimes it runs:
Apr 28 14:57:09 gmysql Connection succesful
Apr 28 14:57:09 About to create 3 backend threads for UDP
% Apr 28 14:57:09 gmysql Connection succesful
Apr 28 14:57:10 gmysql Connection succesful
Apr 28 14:57:10 gmysql Connection succesful
Apr 28 14:57:10 Done launching threads, ready to distribute questions
And sometimes it crashes on sig11:
% Apr 28 14:56:56 Got a signal 11, attempting to print trace:
Apr 28 14:56:56 [0x80cde64]
Apr 28 14:56:56 [0x829b5a8]
When it runs, sometimes it answers immediately, sometimes after seconds:
[x at x ~]$ time host test.com 127.0.0.1
Using domain server:
Name: 127.0.0.1
Address: 127.0.0.1#53
Aliases:
test.com has address 199.198.197.196
real 0m5.064s
user 0m0.002s
sys 0m0.003s
And sometimes never:
[x at x ~]$ time host test.com 127.0.0.1
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
real 0m10.045s
user 0m0.002s
sys 0m0.004s
[x at x ~]$
I found some things about CS, but the server is not that busy:
2 0 144 870888 29396 773224 0 0 0 0 1199 4035 39 3 58
0
1 0 144 871144 29396 773224 0 0 0 0 1147 3332 18 2 80
0
Since pdns seems to be able to run very well, so any suggestions what I can
do about this?
Thanks
Alexx
