You can replicate even just tables from other servers.

We (e164.org) have 2 reasonably large zone files and are still using 
pdns as the primary DNS server, but we then dump the zones to a single 
flat file we do a diff on the file and transfer that instead...

Same idea as mysql replication, without using mysql replication :)
