This is absolutely not true. / or _ are accepted in the DNS since the
beginning.

Are you sure that you don't mix the *DNS* rules (RFC 1034 and 1035)
with the *hostnames* rules (RFC 1123)? A domaine name foo/bar.example
is legal, a host name www.foo/bar.example is not.
