Yes, I am doing that right now. As for g++, I think that may have been
the issue. I just realized on this box I forgot to upgrade g++ to a more
recent version - I was running 2.96. I will upgrade g++, and upgrade to
2.9.18 and we'll see what happens.

g++ version? Might be causing the crashes. Do you compile on RH9? If you
can, try compiling using g++ 3.3 or 3.4.

Can you try 2.9.18 - not that I think it will fix your problem but it is
easier for me to compare.
