This is the most elegant way, but currently not implemented.

I've attached a patch to pdns-2.9.16 (cd pdns-2.9.16; cat ../
smysql_failover.diff | patch -p1) which tries to implement this.

It compiles, but isn't tested because I lack a MySQL server. Maybe you 
want to give it a try.
