One assumes it must be a syntax issue?

all of the screens of the Sql Server ODBC wizard, not all of the options
(not even defaults) are stored as part of the ODBC connection.  When I added
the ODBC data source in the first place, I merely entered the details on the
first screen of the wizard and hit 'Test Connection' followed by 'Finish'.
I've just been through all the screens as I thought it may have something to
do with the transformation options (e.g. "Use ANSI quoted identifiers"),
didn't actually change any of the options, but hey presto its now working.
