I can do dns queries no problem.

I do have a /var/run directory. Do not run chroot.    I did try an RPM
install vs the source distrubution and it works.. While compiling it
didn't generate any errors, and in monitor mode it works, just not when
running it via start.

What does "/etc/rd.c/init.d/pdns monitor" say exactly, can you paste
that here?

Do you have a /var/run directory? Do you run with chroot?
