Thanks for all the help.  I couldn't get the socket going, but changed it to tcp:localhost:705 and voila, everything is going.

And have a 'few'stats now :)

SNMP support has been added after 1.1, so you'll have to run a newer version. We provide packages for the master branch at https://repo.powerdns.com/ with SNMP support enabled for most distributions.
