That's very strange. Additional debug information e.g. basedn, filter, query 
name and type, ttl and the result should now appear somewhere in the logs.
What OS/Distribution do you use?

As far as I remember:

Replication can additionally be done by the backend in a native way without 
AXFR transfers.

The backend is authoritive, but doesn't send notifications to the slaves if 
something changes.

Acting as slave isn't possible (ldapbackend is read-only)

administrator.
